Typology of city residents’ activity in terms of their mobility

Abstract

The article presents the results of research whose main objective was to present typological differentiation of city residents based on their level of mobility. The research attempted to analyze the evolution and differences in mobility – as an expression of preferences for urban travel – among the identified respondent mobility types, taking into account the issues related to decisions on the method and frequency of travel and socio-demographic variables. The nationwide research was conducted on a sample of 1,050 representatives of city population using the quota sampling technique and an electronic survey questionnaire. The research enabled the authors to present a structured classification of five different types of mobility. The group of most active respondents are characterized by the most complex travel chain involving a wide range of transport modes used with high frequency in their usual travels around their cities. The results can be useful in modification of the existing attitudes and habits in the area of mobility behavior and in directing the attention of city residents towards more environmentally friendly solutions. Moreover, the results can also prove helpful to road authorities and policy makers in dealing with decision problems occurring at all stages of infrastructural road projects, especially to those who wish to provide a more user-friendly solutions in the road infrastructure.
