Friction coefficient, texture depth and tyre/road noise evaluation method by analysis of tyre print image

Marcin Błaszczak , Karol J. Kowalski , Jan Król

Abstract

The development of road network requires intensive research in the field of road maintenance. It is essential to develop efficient and effective assessment methods of road pavement condition. Monitoring the level of the traffic safety-related characteristics (friction coefficient and texture depth) is particularly important for road users, while keeping road noise as low as possible is important because of the urban population living near them. The article presents the results of research work, the aim of which was to establish whether it is possible to determine skid resistance properties, pavement/tyre noise and texture depth by tyre prints on the basis of the analysis of tyre/pavement contact point. The paper presents an original method of the image analysis of tyre/pavement contact point. The correlation of this method with standard test methods, such as laser profilometer texture depth MPD, SRT-3 skid resistance tester and CPX road noise was investigated. As a result of this study it has been demonstrated that there is a significant correlation between the introduced method and MPD and SRT-3 methods for all tested pavement types as well as with CPX method for non-porous pavements.
