Cost-intensity of ground improvement methods in road construction – perspectives of investors and industry enterprises

Abstract

The paper is a research paper and focuses on the analysis and evaluation of the cost-intensity of different ground improvement methods in road construction. The source basis is the results of a survey of respondents. The survey was conducted among a wide range of investors and industry enterprises representing different segments of the road construction market. A wide range of technologies were included in the analysis, including concrete columns, chemical stabilisation or precast piles. The results of the study show that the cost intensity varies depending on the method used, although in most cases it remains similar, corresponding to the standard cost of ground improvement adopted by the industry. Methods with higher costs, such as piling and concrete columns, significantly affect the total cost of road projects. Significant differences in the perception of these costs were identified between investors and industry enterprises, suggesting that service contractors may have a different perspective on the costs associated with ground improvement. The paper also discusses opportunities to optimise the cost of ground improvement and makes recommendations to improve the cost-intensity and sustainability of road projects.
