Stiffness of layered shells in soil-steel bridge structures

Czesław Machelski

Abstract

In the case of construction of a maximum span soil-steel bridge structure, the cover plate, in the form of a circumferential shell, mounted on the base shell, is used. The bolted connection of the cover plate is flexible. The analysis of connection flexibility, supported by the test results of layered panels, made of corrugated Super Cor shells, is presented in the paper. The connection stiffness under the loads, occurring during construction and exploitation stages, is analyzed. The results can be used to estimate the displacements of the shell during backfilling and for calculation of internal forces under live loads. It has been shown that the connection stiffness depends on the load intensity.
