Railway level crossing traffic safety based on economic-technical analysisand photogrammetric method

Marcin Bilski , Anna Zuzanna Małek , Michał Kaiser

Abstract

The article characterizes railway-road level crossings in terms of safety measures and pavement types used. Cost analysis of various level crossing safety devices and pavement types was conducted in order to determine the most advantageous solutions in terms of safety and ride quality. The results indicate that construction costs of various traffic safety devices on level crossings are generally similar due to the considerable financial expenditures required; differences in the costs of level crossing pavements reach 40%, depending on the chosen technological solution. The final section of the article presents a method for evaluation of visibility at level crossings using an unmanned aerial vehicle. Owing to its accuracy and ease of application, the presented method may serve as an alternative to typical solutions which involve the use of a magnetic measuring square (with or without target plates) in combination with a measuring tape, a laser distance meter or a total station.
