Application of acoustic emission to fault diagnostics in civil engineering

Zbigniew Ranachowski

Abstract

The definition of Acoustic Emission (AE) signal and the nature of its origin and propagation is discussed in the paper. Three areas of application of AE in Civil Engineering are presented: monitoring of reinforced concrete girders, pressurised industrial storage tanks and steel bridges. Application of AE monitoring in investigation of concrete materials is also presented. Accoustic emission testing is found to be an effective diagnostic tool.

Keywords:
