The effect of synthetic wax and surface-active agent on the aging and low-temperature properties of 50/70 bitumen before and after foaming

Abstract

Service life of an asphalt mixture is significantly affected by the bitumen, whose properties are prone to change due to aging. The presented research was focused on the effect of synthetic wax and surface-active agent on the aging of 50/70 bitumen. Synthetic wax was added to the bitumen to reach the content levels of 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0% and 2.5% (by mass); surface-active agent was added at the content levels of 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.6% (by mass). The influence of the two additives was investigated both before and after the foaming process. The analyzed parameters included the change in penetration at 25°C, softening point and Fraass breaking point after shortterm (technological) and long-term (in-service) aging. Low-temperature parameters of the binder (stiffness modulus and creep slope) were also determined. Significant influence of additives on the aging process of the 50/70 bitumen was noted; however, its intensity varied. The disadvantageous influence on aging was more pronounced for synthetic wax than for surface-active agent. Addition of synthetic wax to the 50/70 bitumen before foaming affected the foaming process characteristics more intensively than the addition of surface-active agent. Similar relationships were noted in the case of binder low-temperature properties.
