Influence of composition and properties of mastic with natural asphalt on mastic asphalt mixture resistance to permanent deformation

Abstract

Properties of an asphalt mixture are significantly influenced by the mastic, whose characteristics are related not only to the properties of its ingredients, but also to their relative content – especially to the filler-binder ratio. Assessment of mastic may be performed using the same test methods as those used for road bitumen, treating the material as if it were a very viscous binder. The results may be useful in preliminary design of mastic asphalt mixtures, particularly in the context of service life of road bridge pavements, where mastic asphalt provides a protective layer over the waterproofing. The article presents the results of ductility tests performed on mastic as well as permanent deformation resistance tests performed on mastic asphalt mixture. The materials were based on road bitumen 35/50 modified with an addition of natural Trinidad Epuré bitumen. The aim of the research was to determine the influence of the filler-binder ratio and the quantity of the natural bitumen additive on the conventional tensile energy in ductility test as well as to determine the correlation between the properties of mastic containing the modified binder and the characteristics of the obtained mastic asphalt mixture.
