Design of airport pavements with use of analytical methods and FEM

Mirosław Graczyk , Artur Zbiciak , Kazimierz Józefiak

Abstract

The paper presents examples of design solutions obtained with analytical methods and describes the applied design approach. It also includes the outputs of analyses carried out on two types of airport pavement structures: rigid and flexible. Analytical possibilities of Finite Element Method (FEM) are presented with the focus on various computer modelling techniques. The outputs of FEM analyses concerning the stresses, strains and displacements in slabs were compared against the results obtained with the conventional Westergaard model.
