Low temperature cracking of asphalt layers of pavements

Abstract

The paper is based on up to now studies of Polish and foreign literature in field of resistance of asphalt mixtures to low temperature cracking. The author presented different factors (material, environmental, pavement structure and others) affecting low temperature cracking. Distribution of temperature in asphalt layers was discussed. The laboratory testing methods used for determining of bitumen and asphalt mixtures behaviour in low temperatures were reviewed. The stress relaxation phenomenon and thermal cracking models were presented.
