Performance of type "T" prestressed concrete beams with limestone aggregate under long- and short-term loading

Mirosław Biskup , Jan Skawiński

Abstract

Due to the growing demand for aggregates combined with the increase in aggregate excavation and transportation costs, the possibility of use of limestone aggregates in prestressed concrete bridges has long been the subject of consideration in the construction industry. To address this problem, the author performed tests on precast prestressed beams produced using limestone aggregate, aiming to experimentally verify their properties in terms of agreement of their basic material and structural parameters with design and standard principles. Type T12/2010 precast prestressed concrete beams were selected as the elements for testing; the beams were produced using 2/8 and 8/16 limestone grit excavated in Sitkówka near Kielce. The scope of the work included testing of concrete samples as well as short- and long-term testing of ready precast elements, both in field and in laboratory. The obtained results indicate that concrete with limestone aggregate is not necessarily inferior to concretes with magmatic aggregates in terms of mechanical properties; the obtained prestressed beams fulfilled the requirements adopted in the design for consecutive phases of their operation.
