Static characteristics of cantilever bridges

Czesław Machelski , Bartosz Pisarek

Abstract

In the paper, two parameters – stiffness and flexibility – are considered as static characteristics of bridge structures. Stiffness is referred to as the effect of variable load. It is related to the dynamic characteristics of bridges. Flexibility is the inverse of stiffness. Flexibility as a function of time is used to analyze rheological processes, including structural degradation. Owing to the analysis of the relationship between these quantities, an algorithm was created for estimating flexibility based on the stiffness of the object, since the latter value is easier to obtain. In this work, analyses based on computational models of cantilever bridges were performed. The results can be used for other types of bridges, including those with small and medium spans and variable height.
