Laboratory research and full scale testing of high modulus asphalt concrete in road pavement

Dariusz Sybilski , Wojciech Bańkowski

Abstract

This paper presents the development of high modulus concrete AC WMS in Poland. First implementation of AC WMS was in 1997 in Poznań. In 2002 the first edition of guidelines for high modulus asphalt concrete was published. The second edition of guidelines appeared in 2008 as the result of research project funded by GDDP. The research covered a wide range of laboratory tests with use of performance test method. Mechanical analyzes of pavement structures showed a better performance of variants with high modulus concrete. Typical pavement structures with AC WMS including 20 and 30 years of design life were presented. Current requirements for AC WMS are included in WT-2, which is Polish application document for new European standards. Development of high modulus asphalt concrete was also included in European project “SPENS”. For its purpose test sections were built in Pruszków and tested with heavy vehicle simulator (HVS). The results confirmed good performance of pavement with AC WMS. Finally a list of AC WMS applications in Poland is presented and benefits of high modulus concrete are summarized.
