Shear and peeling stresses in adhesive joints

Marek Łagoda

Abstract

The paper discusses elastic analysis of the shear and peeling stresses. The method to strengthen a structure with steel plates glued to it has been used in Poland since the mid 60’s. However, the theory behind the strengthening methods has not been given much interest and most efforts have been invested in the experimental tests. However, since the mid 80’s different theories have been proposed and methods to calculate forces and stresses in the adhesive layer have been presented. The theories have so far mostly dealt with linear elastic conditions, but also some theories regarding non elastic conditions and fracture mechanics have been presented. They can be used for the strengthening of concrete structures. In this paper the differential equations describing stresses in the adhesive layer are presented. This is done both for a beam under a single transverse load or distributed load and strengthened in bending with a single epoxy glued plate.
