Aesthetic aspect of the shape of bridge structures abstract

Grażyna Łagoda , Marek Łagoda

Abstract

The ancients considered aesthetics to be a property of an object, like function or pleasure, a property that manifested itself in the harmonious proportions of the dimensions. This roughly summarized philosophical background indicates that aesthetics in bridge design can be assessed, above all, from the point of view of form and shape, on one hand, and from that of functionalism and efficiency, on the other. Bridge design is essentially an engineering problem. Safety, construction process, and economy, among other things, play decisive roles Unfortunately, the aesthetic aspect is often neglected, and few significant contributions have been made toward the advancement of bridge aesthetics. The recommendations given in this paper derive mainly from consideration of view expressed by authors in the basis of experience and literature. The problem becomes of increasing importance with the greater efforts now being made to bring the road system of Poland up to the standards required for modern transport.
