Influence of horizontal curves geometry on driving comfort

Abstract
Results of investigation concerning an influence of horizontal curve parameters (that is: circle radius, deflection angle and road width) on lateral acceleration and its change in time experienced by vehicle drivers and passengers are presented. It was found that for a wider cross section a higher value of lateral acceleration and its change in time is obtained, and these relationships can be described as linear functions. Higher values of circle curve radius caused lower values of lateral acceleration and its change in time and in this case relationships can be described as power functions. The relationship between presented measures of driving condition and deflection angle can be described by curvilinear functions with a maximum for a deflection angle between 25° and 40°. Drivers choose driving with a high speed on curve section of road instead of their comfort. This is confirmed by considerable values of lateral acceleration and their change in time.
