Deteriorating effects of water and frost on asphalt mixes – state of the art
Piotr Jaskuła
Abstract
The paper is based on studies of Polish and foreign literature. The influence of significant factors on adhesion and resistance of asphalt mixes to water and frost action is presented. The influence of bitumen properties, type of aggregate, adhesive agents (amines and hydrated lime), air voids content and highway drainage was described. Mechanism and theories of adhesion and mechanisms of damage of bond between bitumen and aggregate were presented. The laboratory testing methods that were used for determining the strength of the bond between bitumen and aggregate and the resistance of asphalt mixes to action of water and frost were reviewed. Moreover, methods used to increase the resistance of asphalt mixes to water and frost were also presented.
