Fatigue assessment procedure for metal bridge decks

Tomasz Siwowski

Abstract

Deck slabs are the most vulnerable elements of bridges. In case of metal decks (steel, aluminium) the frequently observed damage is due to fatigue cracks. Therefore a fatigue assessment procedure is important in design of new bridges and also in evaluation of existing ones. In both cases the reliable fatigue assessment can be decisive for estimated service life of a bridge. The main steps of the fatigue assessment procedure according to Eurocodes have been described in the paper. This procedure is based on safe life design method coupled with nominal stress convention. The procedure application for fatigue assessment of an aluminium bridge deck has been also presented. On the basis of FEM calculation and fatigue assessment according to Eurocodes the factors determining the fatigue life of a metal deck have been established and evaluated. This example can be easily used for such kind of assessment for an arbitrary metal deck.
