Evaluation of air-entrainment in concrete roads and parking pavements

Abstract

Application of air void structure testing method for evaluation of durability of concrete pavements in freeze-thaw conditions is presented. Tests were performed on hardened concrete specimens cored out of several recently constructed pavements like a road pavement, a frontier facilities pavement, ground and multistory parking slabs. Results of tests were analysed in relation to requirements imposed by national technical specifications and standards. Non-adequate air-pore structure was detected in some cases in spite of application of air entrainment admixtures conforming to standards. In several cases the test results confirmed the proper entrained air void structure. During several months of concrete pavement construction the monitored spacing factor of air voids in concrete was well below 0.200 mm and the adequate frost resistance test results were obtained. The significance of air voids structure parameters is discussed in relation to the commonly specified total air volume in concrete mix. Some possibilities for optimization of air voids structure in concrete pavements are indicated.
