Conditions for scientific development in civil engineering

Abstract
The objective of the paper is to initiate a discussion on directions of scientific development in the area of civil engineering. A concept for distinguishing a scientific investigation and a technical activity is presented. Basic and specific features of civil engineering are described and their influence on directions of scientific development is discussed. Several examples of research areas are provided, including these of high scientific merit and of high potential for applications.
