Laboratory tests of suitability of synthetic and rubber wastes for the soils used for road embankments

Abstract

In Poland there are about 50 millions m3 of communal wastes collected per year, including 10 - 13% wastes from synthetic materials. The mass of rubber wastes is about 3.5 millions tons. These wastes occupy large space, their decomposition is lasting up to 500 years and in practice they are non-toxic. Such waste materials if properly processed, can be used for fills reinforcing. The use of synthetic materials wastes for road embankments reinforcing can reduce problems of their storage. The mechanically processed wastes, mixed in proper proportions with sand, can significantly reinforce it. First of all the shearing strength is increased. In the paper the results of laboratory tests of soils reinforced with processed wastes of synthetic materials and used car tyres are presented.
