Assessment of suitability of reclaimed asphalt pavement material for use in cement concrete pavements

Abstract

The article presents an assessment of suitability of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) material for use in cement concrete mixtures dedicated for road structures. The analysis encompassed determination and evaluation of six parameters of RAP material in terms of its usability in concrete pavement construction. Since the external conditions acting on an asphalt pavement during its service life may cause aging of the binder and changes in proportions of its chemical composition, it was necessary to analyze the parameters of the obtained RAP aggregate, with particular focus on texture, water absorption, binder properties and surface characteristics of particles covered with bituminous binder. Reuse of RAP material in cement concrete mixtures dedicated for pavement structures is proposed in the article. Basic parameters of cement concretes containing chosen RAP aggregates were determined and discussed.
