Development and upgrading of two-lane single road network in Poland

Marian Tracz , Mariusz Kieć

Abstract

The paper presents the problems related to the development and upgrading of two-lane single road network which for many years constituted the basic road network in Poland. With well-known principles of the development of motorways and also some expressways this paper focuses on the problems of retrofitting and operation of two-lane single roads taking into account their changing role. It analyses the changes in the functioning of the main roads resulting, inter alia, from construction and operation of bypasses, taking into account 2+1 roads and retrofitting popular 1x2 roads, including paved shoulders with a multifunctional median lane separating the two lanes in built-up areas and a passing relief lane. The paper includes some road safety and operational analyses of the above-mentioned sections. The final part comprises summary and recommendations for development and upgrading of two-lane single road network in Poland.
