The use of FEM for thermal analyses of the asphalt pavement

Jarosław Górszczyk , Wanda Grzybowska

Abstract

The work concerns the transient heat flow in the pavement structure, for medium and heavy traffic. For both pavement structures the 5 variants with different heat conductivity coefficients were analyzed. The same boundary conditions were assumed. The temperature distribution in the pavement structure for the initial moment was calculated using the stationary analyses with the defined border conditions, on the basis of real temperature measurements carried out in Cracow in 2006 year. The heat flow defined with Fourier-Kirchhoff equation was analyzed with finite element method using ANSYS system and Multiphysics modulus. One-way heat conductivity, material uniformity and isotropy was assumed. The analysis was performed for different variants of structural layers and the temperature sensibility for chosen parameters. Comparison of temperature distribution that was calculated with measured temperature in actual airport pavement revealed good fitting so the correctness of the applied approach was confirmed.
